Slow Down Move Over Law

There is a little-known law that was passed five years ago that requires motorists to slow down and/or move over when there is a stationary emergency vehicle that is displaying its lights.

If the motorist is driving a highway with at least four lanes, he must, if possible, make a lane change into a lane not adjacent to the stationary emergency vehicle.  If it is not possible to safely change lanes then the driver must reduce speed and proceed with caution.

Violation is a Class 1 misdemeanor and could result in suspension of the drivers license if there is damage to a vehicle or an injury to another person.

This law is now being promoted by the State Police of Virginia in the “Slow Down Move Over” campaign.
