Fredericksburg.com – U.S. 17 crash intersection has a history of accidents .

The intersection of Poplar Road and US Rt 17 has a high rate of accidents.

Between Jan. 1, 2005, and Dec. 12, 2008, there were 27 vehicle crashes within 30 feet of the intersection of Poplar Road and U.S. 17, according to VDOT records.

Seventeen of the crashes resulted in injuries. More than half of the crashes, 15, resulted from red-light running. The rest were angle crashes, involving turning movements.

A crash there recently killed Stafford resident Susan Lee Haines, whose Honda sedan was hit by a tractor trailer as Ms. Haines turned left onto Route 17 from Poplar Rd.

Witnesses say that James Edgar Smith of Gwynn’s Island in Mathews County, Virginia ran a red light.

The wreck is under investigation and The Stafford Sheriff’s Office is still looking for witnesses who saw the crash.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is performing a safety review of the intersection.

There have been several proposals on how to increase safety at the intersection.  Ideas include adding a camera to catch drivers who run the red light and lowering the speed limit to 35 mph.
